Something changed when we talked to that 'recording' of Captain Zigfried and Dr. Cassilda. Carcossa has been roused by slumber, and its Shadows have emerged from the dark. Yes, other Doom Spirits reside here, but they're not quite all 'there'. The closest comparison I can make is that they're 'ghosts' of some sort, but they weren't slain. No, they haven't been born yet, and despaired over it for thousands of years. It's unnerving…
Shades
There are others lingering alongside the Doom Spirits, and they're definitely human in nature. Again, they resemble ghosts, but don't quite fit the definition. Repeating conversations, unaware that no one's around, pantomiming day-to-day tasks… they're like that recording we viewed upstairs. Afterimages left in the past, reliving events that have already come and gone. At least they aren't aware of it, but the abandoned Shadows are…
Eos
As our Triad wound closer together, Apophis and I realized that Eos' presence made sunlight burn less. We refused to acknowledge it, but it became clear that she wasn't actually a Doom Spirit. Was she merely a Light Elemental cast into the Plane of Darkness of some sort of offence? Could she have been a Champion of Light herself? That didn't matter to us… until Eos' pain worsened. Argh! Why am I telling you this?
After completing the 'Liederkreis Lorelei' quest:

*mutter* It's only possible to turn into one of us. *mutter* Not the other way around? Eos is fine the way she is, but what if… *mumble* …is she in pain? We can't force her to- gah! Can't you see I'm trying to think here? Give me some space. Please.

I suppose I'll have to stitch my stomach closed all on my own, with the zero amount of arms I have. Tch, I thought I could keep the Elves under my sway this time, but they jumped at Astero's empty promises like starved rats… He really did use me and Apophis like we were nothing. This will not stand. I was the terror and salvation of the north. No, I still am! Dryden, Eos… I'll find you after I peel Astero, and wear his skin like a bear pelt.
